Law and Society Association Graduate Student Workshop 2011

LSA GRADUATE STUDENT WORKSHOP 2011

The Law and Society Association is pleased to announce the twenty-fifth Graduate Student Workshop (GSW), to be held May 31-June 1, 2011 immediately preceding the 2011 Annual Meeting of the Law and Society Association in San Francisco, California, USA. We invite applications from graduate students in any field (including law students in JD programs or advanced degree programs) whose scholarly interests involve sociolegal studies. The program will consist of panel presentations, seminar sessions, and informal discussions over shared meals. The goals are to build intellectual community among the next generation of Law and Society scholars, to foster collegial networks between graduate students and leading faculty in the field, and to promote constructive dialogue among graduate students and faculty participants about students’ individual research projects. This year’s planning committee is chaired by Christopher Zorn (Pennsylvania State University) and includes Susan Bandes (DePaul University), Chuck Epp (University of Kansas), Justin Richland (University of California, Irvine), Rebecca Sandefur (Stanford University), Galit Sarfaty (University of Pennsylvania), and Mark Suchman (Brown University).

About 35 students will be selected to participate in the Workshop. To help offset travel costs, the Law and Society Association offers a reimbursement of up to $250 for students within North America, or $450 for students outside North America (receipts required). Note that an individual student may only participate in two GSWs during his/her graduate career. Applications must be received by January 15, 2011. The application consists of a letter of not more than two pages and a curriculum vitae. In the letter, applicants should describe their dissertation or other research interests, their current status in graduate school, and how they might benefit from attending the Workshop. 2010 Freedom and Justice Legal Writing Competition

Washington Legal Foundation (WLF) is pleased to announce its 2010 Freedom and Justice Legal Writing Competition. Essays are due one August, 27. Students are asked to respond to the following prompt:

“How have recent U.S. Supreme Court rulings on civil lawsuit pleading standards impacted litigation, and what are the potential implications of congressional efforts to repeal those judicial decisions?”

In Ashcroft v. Iqbal, 129 S. Ct. 1937, 1950 (2009) and Bell Atlantic Corp. v. Twombly, 127 S. Ct. 1955 (2007), the U.S. Supreme Court issued rulings which clarified its interpretation of the standards of particularity that plaintiffs must meet when crafting civil litigation complaints. Federal legislation, such as The Notice Pleading Restoration Act of 2009, S.1504, is being considered to overturn these decisions. Explain the Court's rulings in the two cases; assess case analysis of lower court decisions to see what impact the rulings have had, and examine the effect the repeal of Iqbal and Twombly would have on the civil litigation environment.
